Giving personalized gifts is a great way to show you care – but what if you knew how to make a gift box as well as a gorgeous gift to get inside, so you could really wow friends and family on those special occasions? This step-by-step project takes you through exactly how to cut, score and fold your cardboard, and then assemble it to produce a beautifully decorated gift box with a lid. Keen to give it a try, huh? My friend asked me to create a box to fit the mugs inside… more specifically, to fit the personalized mugs you can buy from the photo shops! She had some printed herself that she wanted to give away, so I came up with this design, which uses very little cardboard, but is of a considerable size. It’s quick to make, sturdy and stable, it offers a lot of flexibility when it comes to how you decorate it, it doesn’t require any die cutting… and yes – the mug fits inside!

You will need to:

• 3 sheets A4 of the Kraft Cardstock
• 1 A4 Colored Cardstock sheet

 

• Paper Trimmer – I used the Crop Cutterpilla

 

• Double-sided tape and/or glue

 

• Score Board – I used my Hunkydory board, which has box base and box lid lines

 

• Scissors

 

• Corner Punch & Hole Punch (optional)

 

• A twin or a ribbon

 

• Embellishments from your clever stash

Step to create a gift box

Take 3 A4 sheets of Kraft card and cut 2 pieces at 6 x 8.5′′ for the box base, then cut 1 piece at 5.5 x 7.5′′ for the box lid.

Step 1: Score and Fold Base Sections

Working on the base box of your scoreboard, place your cardboard horizontally on the board and score 3″ and 8.” Next, rotate your cardboard so that it sits vertically on your scoreboard and scores 4.” Bend on all lines of score, and cut as shown below.

Step 2: Score the Lid section

Working on the box lid on your scoreboard, place your card on the board and score at 1.1″ on all sides.

Bend and score on all the score lines, and cut into each corner of the tabs as shown in the picture below.

Using PVA glue, stick all corners together to ensure that all corners are aligned.

 

Step 3: Put the Box Base together

Run the red liner tape at each of the narrow edges of the cardstock.

Attach the base section of one box to a narrow section of the base of the other box.

Join the other side of it.

 

Step 4: Decorate the box

I decorated with panels made with a colored card. Cut two panels at 4 3⁄4 x 3 3⁄4″ and two panels at 3 3⁄4 x 2 3⁄4″ and stick them to the sides of the box. These measurements will allow a nice mat and layer effect, and will also add strength.

To cover the base of the box, cut one piece of colored cardboard that measures 5 x 3″ and stick inside the bottom of the box. I used a contrasting color to add interest inside the box!

To create a tag, cut a rectangle of 1 1⁄2 x 3″ in either a colored or a Kraft card. Round off the corners if you’ve got a corner rounder and punch a hole in the top so that you can thread a twine or a ribbon.

Use embellishments in your stash to decorate the top of the box, then secure the tag in place. Your beautiful box is over!
